By: Amy Whittingham

For many teenagers, passing your driving test for the first time can be something you will never forget. After working hard and practicing for months, you will feel elated once you pass. Purchasing your first car will also be a moment to remember. Obtaining reasonably priced insurance, however, can be quite a frustrating task. Because you are so young, insurance companies tend to charge you an exorbitant amount, and some companies don't even offer coverage to anyone under 21.

Insurance costs can be too high for anyone, even good drivers, if they have insurance with a group that has a high incidence of claims. In addition, young drivers face especially high rates, even with a good driving record, just because of their age. These young people need to play it safe and maintain a spotless driving record so that they can get by with the least possible insurance expense. Some of the things they can do to help themselves include:

Car Choice - starting off in a vehicle with a smaller engine size could help convince insurance companies that they are indeed less of a risk even though it might not be the hot rod they expected.

Parking - To help you to make a difference in you care insurance quote, you could park your vehicle in a secure garage overnight instead of on a road in town. Though this sounds silly by reducing the risk of theft or damage, could lead to cheaper premiums.

Additional Training-many novice drivers are deciding take a PassPlus course which would reduce their premiums when they are first driving.

Using PassPlus, young drivers will learn the more difficult driving techniques. Some topics the course will cover are: how to drive in different weather conditions, night driving, and driving on motorways. It is also important to compare various insurance companies. It takes time but can save a significant amount of money. Don't sign up for the first policy you come across. It may not be the best priced. With courses and a little research, young drivers can decrease their chances of an accident and save the hassle of filing and insurance claim.
